Inbox - December 21, 2012

Inbox is our weekly round up of whisky news and PR material that has found its way in to our email inbox. It was created as we cannot write full articles or do justice to every piece that we receive. It features items from around the world of whisky and is published by us each Friday.

Within Inbox we aim to write a few lines detailing each press release/piece of news/PR event that we have received and provide links, where possible, for you to find out further information.

This week's edition is the last of 2012 - Inbox will return in a couple of weeks on Friday 4 January 2013.  Most PR companies and whisky brands have now wound down for the festive period, and have spent the week sending us Christmas cards and best wishes for the season.  Thank you to all those that have. However, there are still one or two bits of interesting news, so here goes ...

Bowmore - Oldest bottle sells
A few months ago, we reported on the oldest ever bottling from an Islay distillery - the Bowmore 1957. Bottle No.1 has now been sold in an auction which recently took place at the Bowmore distillery on Islay. The minimum reserve price was £100,000 (or $155,000) and this was met by an anonymous bidder from the USA. The whisky is bottled at the cask strength of 42.1% ABV and has been maturing for 43 years in a second-fill ex-sherry cask, before being transferred to a second-fill ex-bourbon cask.

Bottle No. 1’s profits will be donated to five Scottish charities that encompass a variety of worthy causes - Alzheimer Scotland (care for people with dementia, their caregivers and families), The Beatson Oncology Centre (care for cancer patients receiving treatment in the west of Scotland), Chas (children’s hospice services), Erskine (medical care for Armed Forces) and Marie Curie Cancer Care (cancer care and research). The news is a lovely boost for these charities at this time of year.

The Worship Street Whistling Shop Whisky Emporium
The renowned London cocktail bar The Worship Street Whistling Shop has teamed up with whisky evangelist Colin Dunn (best known recently for his work as a Diageo whisky brand ambassador) to create a new consumer experience showcasing whisky. The Whisky Emporium is designed to give consumers, who are maybe new to whisky. a full on sensory experience that takes you from the spirit's dark origins to where it is heading in the future in six parts.

The Emporium is designed to engage all of the senses - each part involves some acting, imagery, smells being pumped into the room, music, food and a specially designed Whistling Shop cocktail to accompany and demonstrate the points raised.  The parts cover the origins of whisky, the history of blending, the influence of wood, regions of Scotland and the future of Scotch.

We were delighted to take part in the first 'performance' last week and can highly recommend it.  It was a full immersion whisky experience and plenty of fun - the Whisky Emporium will run for the first three months of 2013.  Bookings can be made through www.whistlingshop.co.uk and costs £90 per person, with a minimum group size of four.  You can see images of our night on the Whisky For Everyone Facebook page.  Check it out.

We would like to take this opportunity to wish all our readers a happy festive period and thank you for your support throughout 2012 - Chris, Karen, Matt C & Matt T.
