Inbox - February 22, 2013

Welcome to this week's Inbox.  For those that have recently discovered us, Inbox is our weekly round up of whisky news and PR material that has found its way in to our email inbox. It was created as we cannot write full articles or do justice to every piece received. It features items from around the world of whisky and is published by us each Friday.

Within Inbox we aim to write a few lines detailing each press release/piece of news/PR event that we have received and provide links, where possible, for you to find out further information.  Here we go with what has caught our attention in this week's news ...

Russell's Reserve - Single Barrel announced
The father and son combination responsible for making Wild Turkey are rolling out their boldest and richest bourbon yet.  Jimmy and Eddie Russell, who have a combined total of 90 years experience working in the American bourbon industry, are releasing a whiskey aimed at the bourbon connoisseur - the Russell's Reserve Single Barrel.

The Russell's Reserve Single Barrel is bottled at a feisty 110 proof having been matured in heavily charred casks and is un-chill filtered, which is unusual for a bourbon. It will be available in specialist liquor stores across the USA, plus selected bars and restaurants. The recommended price for a 75cl bottle is $49.99.

Jimmy Russell declares, "This is bourbon at its best. What is incredibly special about the Russell's Reserve Single Barrel is that each barrel has its own personality.  This bottling delivers a burst of intense vanilla, creamy toffee and hints of burnt orange, along with tastes of liquorice and aniseed on the palate, culminating with a rich and long finish."

Talisker - A storming new release
The iconic Talisker distillery on the isle of Skye has this week announced the release of a new whisky in to its single malt range - Talisker Storm. The new expression is designed to be a more intense and smoky version of Talisker with enhanced and vibrant maritime notes working in conjunction with hot sweetness.

The Storm is designed to sit in the price point between the regular 10 years old and the Distillers Edition in the current range, and is bottle at Talisker's traditional strength of 45.8% ABV.  It will be available shortly in the domestic UK market and selected whisky specialist in Europe.  Rumour has it that Storm is the first of a number of new Talisker expressions that will be appearing during 2013.

Master Blender for Diageo, the owners of Talisker, Dr Jim Beveridge says, “We wanted to focus on distillery character - the bedrock of Talisker Storm. So we sought out some great mature Talisker, enriched and mellowed by time spent in rejuvenated casks, and brought that together with some very fresh distillery character preserved by maturation in refill casks. The result is Talisker’s unique distillery character delivered by aged, mature whiskies, integrated in one vibrant dram.”
