Inbox - The Week's Whisky News (August 11, 2017)

Welcome to Inbox.  For those new to WFE, Inbox is our weekly round up of whisky news and PR material that has found its way in to our email inbox. It was created as we cannot write full articles or do justice to every piece received. It features items from around the world of whisky and is published by us each Friday.

Within Inbox we aim to write a few lines detailing each press release/piece of news/PR event that we have received and provide links, where possible, for you to find out further information.  This is the news that has grabbed our attention this week.

________

Bladnoch
The owners of the Lowland distillery of Bladnoch have announced a new blended Scotch release - the Pure Scot Virgin Oak 43. The new whisky will initially be available in Australia, before being launched in the USA in October, and is designed "for the modern whisky drinker". It joins the regular expression of Pure Scot. This new small batch version has been matured in virgin American oak casks and has been created by Ian McMillan, the Master Distiller at Bladnoch, using a selection of single malt and single grain whiskies. It is bottled at 43% ABV and no indication of price point was given in the press release.

Glenmorangie
The north Highland distillery of Glenmorangie has announced the re-release of a former favourite expression - Glenmorangie Astar. This time it is released as a limited edition but is still matured solely in casks made from American oak harvested from the Ozark Mountains in American state of Missouri. Astar translates as 'journey' from Gaelic. It has taken Dr. Bill Lumsden - the Director of Distilling, Whisky Creation & Whisky Stocks at Glenmorangie - almost a decade to orchestrate the Astar's re-release. The 2017 Edition is non chill-filtered and bottled at 52.5% ABV. It will be priced at £74 per bottle and be initially available in the UK through specialist whisky retailers from September.

"At Glenmorangie we are always searching for perfection – and Astar’s first release, entirely matured in our designer casks, was a momentous step on our journey. I’m delighted to be able to share the 2017 release with more single malt lovers."
Dr. Bill Lumsden.

Jack Daniel's
The leading Tennessee whiskey brand has announced a new limited edition expression - Jack Daniel's Red Dog Saloon. This is named after the Red Dog Saloon, which was opened by company founder Jack Daniel in the brand's home town of Lynchburg, Tennessee. The saloon was opened 125 years ago and the whiskey is released to commemorate this. It is not sure why it was named the Red Dog but it was one of two saloons Daniel owned in the town - the other being the White Rabbit Saloon, which has also given its name to a limited edition of Jack Daniel's.

The Jack Daniel's Red Dog Saloon is initially available in limited quantities across the USA, but will appear in selected world markets later in the year. It is released at 43% ABV and will cost $28.99 US per bottle.

Signatory Vintage

Independent bottler Signatory Vintage have teamed up with Davidoff of Geneva, the famous cigar manufacturer and retailer, to release a very special single malt - the Macallan 1991 25 years old Single Cask. The single ex-sherry butt, one of the oldest from the Macallan distillery currently held in Signatory's stock, was filled in November 1991 and has yielded just 494 bottles.

The whisky is presented in a veneer casket and each bottle is individually numbered. It has been bottled at the natural cask strength of 53.5% ABV. The Macallan 1991 25 years old Single Cask will only be available in Davidoff of Geneva stores throughout Asia including China, Hong Kong, Japan, Macau, Malaysia, Singapore and Taiwan. No indication of price was given in the press release.
